A beauty enthusiast has revealed a cheap and helpful way to clean makeup brushes using everyday products found around the house.
The Sydney woman shared a video on TikTok and combined extra virgin olive oil with antibacterial soap to form a smooth paste.
The makeup brushes looked badly stained with dark colours from overuse, but were transformed within seconds of using the homemade concoction, warm water and a rubber oven mitt from Kmart.
In the video the woman claims the olive oil conditions the bristles while the soap removes any unwanted bacteria.

One by one the woman cleaned her entire collection of makeup brushes in the bathroom while wearing a $6 rubber oven mitt.
The oven mitt not only protected her hand from stains but the texture also cleaned the brushes thoroughly.
The clean brushes were laid slightly elevated with the bristles facing down on a towel in order to dry quickly.
Beauty experts recommend washing your makeup brushes after every use or at least once a week to avoid bacterial growth inside the brushes and prevent a spotty, uneven application.
WHY CLEANING YOUR MAKEUP BRUSHES IS IMPORTANT
Bacteria growth – bacteria can grow inside the brushes if residue from makeup and foundation remains on the brushes for long periods of time
Spotty application – using a dirty makeup brush can create an uneven or spotty application on the skin
Damages brushes – build-up on your makeup brushes can cause the fibres to break and the bristles to weaken, making it even harder to apply your makeup properly
Skin irritation – the eventual damage caused to your brushes can start to harden the bristles and change their form, which can cause skin irritation
Breakouts and clogged pores – dirty makeup tools introduce bacteria into your products and onto the skin, which can cause breakouts to occur
Infection – in addition to breakout-causing germs, your brushes can pick up some dangerous bacteria like E.coli as well as various fungi
Wasted money – if the brushes aren’t cared for properly, this means the user will need to spend more money buying new brushes more frequently
Makeup brushes should be cleaned after every use or at least once a week

The beauty experts at Ipsy have also endorsed the cleaning method, explaining how soap alone should not be used as this can damage the bristles.
The TikTok video has since been viewed more than 59,000 with many TikTok users deeming the hack to be helpful.
‘Omg I need to try that,’ one person wrote, while another dubbed it to be ‘genius’.
