Welcome to the first of many twice monthly columns from the Sudbury Arts Council whose mission it is to connect, communicate and celebrate the arts in Greater Sudbury.

– SAC invites photographers and nature lovers to submit photos to Naturally Sudbury, a 2023 desk calendar to be printed in partnership with Journal Printing. Submissions should focus on Sudbury’s natural beauty. A good smartphone and an artist’s eye are all that’s needed. Each photographer selected for the colour calendar will receive five calendars as a thank-you, a credit in the calendar, and, of course, bragging rights. Go to the Sudbury Arts Council website at sudburyartscouncil.ca for more information. The deadline is June 1.

– Sudbury Theatre Centre’s next main stage show, Every Falling Flight by Sudbury playwright Matthew Heiti has been rescheduled, now running from March 3 to March 13.

The fantasy was inspired by the mysterious flight of Amelia Earhart and her famous 1937 record-breaking round-the-world trip. In the lead is actor, singer and musician Ruthie Nkut, known by many for her several riveting performances with YES Theatre including Maria in The Sound of Music. Nkut trained in Toronto and New York. For tickets to what promises to be a memorable night of professional theatre, contact the Sudbury Theatre Centre by phone or book tickets online.

Aéroportée, the French translation and adaptation of Heiti’s play by Miriam Cusson has also been postponed at Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario.

– March Break Theatre Camp, offered the week of March 14 by the Sudbury Theatre Centre is accepting registrations. Scene and character work are part of the program as students prepare a final showcase for parents and friends at the end of the week.

– The Sudbury Symphony Orchestra presents Jazz at Parkside on Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 12:30. It’s been too long since jazz lovers have had the opportunity to enjoy the Tony Simpkin Trio and it’s free. Parkside is located inside the YMCA building on Durham Street and has plenty of parking underground.

– Sudbury Symphony Orchestra has hired Jennifer Grant as its new interim executive director. She holds several degrees in music and the arts, and brings a wide array of experience to Sudbury. She spent more than 20 years as a freelance musician in Europe, performing, recording, teaching, and organizing concert series and tours.

– The search has begun for Greater Sudbury’s seventh poet laureate. Applicants must be published poets, recognized for their achievements and active in the cultural and literary community. The individual receives an honorarium of $1,000 for each of the two-year terms. Closing date for applications is Feb. 28 at 4:30 p.m. Details are available at tinyurl.com/359s6kem.

– Black Lives Matter Sudbury is hosting Amplifying Voices on Turtle Island, its second annual Intersectional Caucus on Saturday, Feb. 26, and Sunday, Feb. 27, starting at 12 p.m. This free online conference uplifts the voices of Black, Indigenous, people of colour (BIPOC) and 2SLBTGQ+ activists, leaders, educators, and change-makers from across Turtle Island.

– Visit the Indigogo campaign to raise money for the documentary Collective Resistance, which explores the theme of Black and Indigenous injustice and solidarity within the context of Ontario. The project is led by a talented group of Sudbury creatives and is spearheaded by activist and emerging director Isak Vaillancourt.

– Congratulations to award-winning children’s book author Danielle Daniel, who recently published Forever Birchwood with Harper Collins. The book is set in Sudbury and, to the delight of Sudbury readers, is a loving reflection of our city with its mines, trees and lakes.

The main character, middle-school student Wolf Lagace, is smart, adventurous and an environmentalist who wants to know more about her Indigenous roots. Daniel’s book titles include the popular Sometimes I Feel Like a Fox. Her debut novel for adults Daughters of the Deer will be published this year. Congratulations to Danielle Daniel for her great achievement.

– Sudbury Arts Council invites those interested in being a member of the board of directors to submit a letter of interest to [email protected]. Applicants do not need to be artists but rather have a passion for the arts in Greater Sudbury.
